Arts Alive, Inc. will present the Summer Arts Camp the week of June 27, 2011 to July 1, 2011. An open house will be held at 3:30 PM on Friday, July 1st to allow friends and parents to view the week's accomplishments. This camp will include morning and afternoon sessions in visual arts, music, dance, cultural arts, computers, journalism, and photography. Lunchtime supervision will be offered, so the campers may stay all day. This camp will cost $40 per week-long class, or $35 per class if more than one class is taken ($140 for the week which includes 4 classes). This fee includes camp supplies and a camp t-shirt. Registration forms and schedules will be available mid-April and will be sent home through the schools in West Point, King William, New Kent, and King and Queen. The camp schedule and forms will also be posted on this page at that time.

Morning
Session
Morning Class 1: 9 AM to 10:15 AM
Passport to
Campers will
explore the Spanish culture by “visiting” five different countries during the
week. In addition to learning some
beginning Spanish, campers will learn about each country’s culture, art, and

crafts, cooking, and other fun activities.

Stamped Cross Stitch Ages completed K to 10
The basic cross-stitch will be
taught using a stamped pattern. Additional stitches may be used such as
French knot, lazy daisy, backstitch, etc. A kit will be provided for each
student which may include a hoop. If not, hoops will be needed as well as
large-eyed sewing needles and scissors.

Accordion Book Making and
Illustrating Ages

accordion book is a completely different way to read a book. Campers will make and illustrate their own
books using their own illustrations.

Paper Mache Creations Ages

Students
will explore the art of paper mache by creating a mask and an animal using
recycled materials. Projects will be finished with a variety of materials
including paint, paper, feathers, and yarn.

Drumming/Orff Ages completed 1st grade

This
class will incorporate drums and percussion instruments as well as orff (like
large xylophones) instruments. Campers
will learn different rhythm patterns to perform in a group.

Students
will learn aspects of journalism such as research, writing, layout,
interviewing techniques, and picture taking.
A field trip to the Tidewater
Review to investigate newspaper techniques will be taken one day. Students should bring a camera if available. A digital camera is preferred, or any film
camera.

Boys Hip-Hop Class Boys only, ages
Campers
will express themselves through dance while learning techniques such as popping,
locking, breaking, etc in this active dance class. Students will also work on a
dance routine to current music. Dance to

This
class will show campers a fun and different way to create! Campers will make items like a belt, rose,
wallet, bag, etc—all out of duct tape!

A beginning

The Museum of Me Ages 9 to 14
Starting
with a wooden box, campers will create a mini museum all about themselves. They
will begin by decorating the outside of the box, and then create mini works of

Beaded
jewelry making techniques will be used to make items such as necklaces,
bracelets, and earrings.

the Greater Lanexa Studio Tour in the fall for several years.
Musical Theatre Ages

Hand Quilting Ages 9 to 14
Basic quilting techniques and
hand stitching will be taught. At the end of this class the students will
have completed a quilt approximately 24"x30". A kit with the
fabric and pattern will be prepared for each student. Class needs are
fabric scissors, sewing needles, thread, pins, and thimbles.

Weaving Ages

Learn how
to weave without a loom! We will be
weaving with a variety of materials such as newspaper, yarn, ribbon, etc. You will be able to make a basket out of

This class
will deal with how to create flyers and newsletters. Students will use

Pablo
Picasso was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Campers will learn about his art and will

printmaking is being able to create multiple prints. Keep one for yourself and

responsible and careful!

Kaleidoscopes
& Kaleidoscope Designs
Ages 9 to 14
Using
brightly colored magic markers, each student will create a radial kaleidoscope
design containing a unique “hidden” message. Will your friends be able to find
the hidden message? Probably not! Then we will build a real Kaleidoscope using
recycled materials, mirror board, and beads.

That 70’s Class Ages
9 to 14
The 1970’s
are cool again! In this class, campers
will learn two art forms making a comeback:
tie-dye and macramé. Learn to
tie-dye a shirt. (Students will need to
bring a white t-shirt for this class.)
Macramé is a system of knot tying rope to make designs and create
objects like flowerpot holders and wall-hanging. Join us in recreating the mood of the 70’s!
