Arts Alive, Inc. will present the Summer Arts Camp the week of June 27, 2011 to July 1, 2011. An open house will be held at 3:30 PM on Friday, July 1st to allow friends and parents to view the week's accomplishments. This camp will include morning and afternoon sessions in visual arts, music, dance, cultural arts, computers, journalism, and photography. Lunchtime supervision will be offered, so the campers may stay all day. This camp will cost $40 per week-long class, or $35 per class if more than one class is taken ($140 for the week which includes 4 classes). This fee includes camp supplies and a camp t-shirt. Registration forms and schedules will be available mid-April and will be sent home through the schools in West Point, King William, New Kent, and King and Queen. The camp schedule and forms will also be posted on this page at that time.
All classes are first-come, first-served and fill quickly!

Morning Session

 

Morning Class 1: 9 AM to 10:15 AM

 

Passport to South America                                                      Ages completed K to completed 2nd grade

Campers will explore the Spanish culture by “visiting” five different countries during the week.  In addition to learning some beginning Spanish, campers will learn about each country’s culture, art, and food.  This class will include making crafts, cooking, and other fun activities.

Teacher:  Lori Eckert, New Kent County Parks and Recreation teacher, Spanish major at Millersville University in PA and lived and studied in Venezuela

 

Egyptologist for a Week                                                           Ages completed K to 9

How would you like to be an archeologist for a week and find ancient burial treasures in Egypt?  Well, you can!  Campers will create a Sarcophagus, a mummy, a scarab necklace, and a surprise from a Pharaoh or Queen’s tomb.

Stamped Cross Stitch                                                              Ages completed K to 10          

The basic cross-stitch will be taught using a stamped pattern.  Additional stitches may be used such as French knot, lazy daisy, backstitch, etc.  A kit will be provided for each student which may include a hoop.  If not, hoops will be needed as well as large-eyed sewing needles and scissors.

Accordion Book Making and Illustrating                                  Ages completed K to 10

An accordion book is a completely different way to read a book.  Campers will make and illustrate their own books using their own illustrations.

Teacher:  Buttons Boggs, freelance artist and illustrator of the book “Do Spiders Need Leggings When It’s Cold Outside?”

 

Paper Mache Creations                                                           Ages completed K to 14

Students will explore the art of paper mache by creating a mask and an animal using recycled materials.  Projects will be finished with a variety of materials including paint, paper, feathers, and yarn.

Drumming/Orff                                                                         Ages completed 1st grade to 14

This class will incorporate drums and percussion instruments as well as orff (like large xylophones) instruments.  Campers will learn different rhythm patterns to perform in a group.

Teacher: Kristi Reynolds is a musician with a master in piano performance from Hardin-Simmons University.  She is the music teacher at Aylett Country Day School.

 

Journalism/Photo Journalism                                                  Ages 7 to 11

Students will learn aspects of journalism such as research, writing, layout, interviewing techniques, and picture taking.  A field trip to the Tidewater Review to investigate newspaper techniques will be taken one day.  Students should bring a camera if available.  A digital camera is preferred, or any film camera.

Boys Hip-Hop Class                                                                  Boys only, ages 7 to 12           

Campers will express themselves through dance while learning techniques such as popping, locking, breaking, etc in this active dance class. Students will also work on a dance routine to current music.  Dance to the latest music!  Dancers may wear comfortable clothing (No Jeans) and tennis shoes.

Teacher:  Paul Dandridge, scholarship ballet major at Indiana University, and former trainee at the Richmond Ballet

Duct Tape Galore                                                                    Ages 9 to 14

This class will show campers a fun and different way to create!  Campers will make items like a belt, rose, wallet, bag, etc—all out of duct tape!  Take a chance and try something new.

Teachers:  Judy Harris teaches art and computer classes at Heritage Public Library where she is the IT specialist.  Karen Henderson is a New Kent County student.  They will be assisted by Josh Eckert, winner of state fair blue ribbon for duct tape creation.

 

Clay Sculpture                                                                         Ages 9 to 14

A beginning exploration working with sculpt it to make masks and sculptures.  Students will decorate their masks using many types of objects including paint, beads, string, etc.

The Museum of Me                                                                              Ages 9 to 14

Starting with a wooden box, campers will create a mini museum all about themselves. They will begin by decorating the outside of the box, and then create mini works of art to fill the inside!

Painting with acrylics                                                              Ages 9 to 14

This class will focus on the basic steps of building colors on canvas to create a three dimensional appearance.

Teacher:  Judi Fleischman, local artist, minor in art at Christopher Newport University

 

Beading and Jewelry Making                                                  Ages 9 to 14

Beaded jewelry making techniques will be used to make items such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Teacher:  Susan O'Rourke, is a local jewelry designer and beading artist.  She is self taught, and has participated in the Greater Lanexa Studio Tour in the fall for several years. 

 

Musical Theatre                                                                       Ages 10 to 14

Web Design                                                                             Ages 10 to 14              

This class will touch on how to develop a webpage using DreamWeaver. Students will complete their own website and how to make a good website. Students will also learn about web safety and being a good cyber-citizen.

The class will explore drawing with different mediums including pastels and charcoals.  The class will also try drawing the human figure, and learn different drawing techniques.

Creative Writing                                                                      Ages 9 to 14    

If you have memories, dreams, wishes, opinions, and a touch of imagination you can write. Every day is a story, every observation is a poem. It feels great to turn your thoughts and feelings into words. You will be surprised by what you can do!

Paper Mache Monsters                                                            Ages 9 to 14

Who is your favorite monster...Sully or Mike? Frankenstein or Big Foot? Students will design and create a monster of their own using the art of paper mache.

Hand Quilting                                                                          Ages 9 to 14                

Basic quilting techniques and hand stitching will be taught.  At the end of this class the students will have completed a quilt approximately 24"x30".  A kit with the fabric and pattern will be prepared for each student.  Class needs are fabric scissors, sewing needles, thread, pins, and thimbles.

Weaving                                                                                  Ages 9 to 14

Learn how to weave without a loom!  We will be weaving with a variety of materials such as newspaper, yarn, ribbon, etc.  You will be able to make a basket out of newspaper and a weaving to hang on your wall.  We will embellish the projects with beads and other found objects.

Desktop Publishing                                                                  Ages 10 to 14  

This class will deal with how to create flyers and newsletters. Students will use Publisher, digital cameras, and scanners. Students will also learn a little about copyright.

Afternoon Session

 

Class 1: 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM

 

Hip-Hop and Jazz Dancing                                                      Ages completed K to 9

This movement class will teach fun moves to pop music, and will emphasize flexibility and acrobatics.  Dancers may wear comfortable clothing (not loose and no jeans) and tennis shoes.

General craft class in which students will make hemp bracelets, sun catchers, beaded key chains, and more!

Painting                                                                                   Ages completed K to 10

Students will have fun creating paintings with watercolor, tempera, watercolor pencils and other media.  Learn the difference between transparent and opaque paint as well as a variety of painting techniques.

Learn the basics of knitting, including casting on and off, knit and purl stitches by doing two fun projects!  Campers will make a hat and a toy animal as time allows.

Beginning Digital Photography                                               Ages 9 to 14

This class will touch on the basics of taking better pictures and using Photoshop!  Come see how to capture things around you a little differently than you have in the past and challenge your creative side! Come on in!  This is going to be great!  Campers will need access to a digital camera and a flash drive (1 GB minimum).

Exploring the Art of Pablo Picasso                                          Ages 9 to 14

Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.  Campers will learn about his art and will explore some of the mediums that he worked in:  ceramics (campers will paint a mug and it will be fired by the end of the week), collage, painting, and found object sculpture.

Coiled Baskets                                                                         Ages 9 to 14

Because West Point is near the Mattaponi and the Pamunkey, coiled basketry is a craft used by the local Native American and is easy to create using yarn and rope.  Originally coiled baskets were created by the local Native Americans using suet and pine needles, but using yarn and rope, one can create a functional basket.

Printmaking and Linoleum Block Carving                               Ages 10 to 14

The joy of printmaking is being able to create multiple prints. Keep one for yourself and give one to a friend! We will explore different materials to create our masterpieces. Glue prints, printing with “junk” and linoleum block printing. Students will have to use sharp instruments in this class, so be prepared to be responsible and careful!

Doll Making                                                                             Ages 10 to 14              

Following a pattern, we will hand-sew a cloth doll, approximately 13" tall, complete with clothing, hair, and face.  A kit with the fabric and pattern will be prepared for each student.  Class needs will be sewing needles. pins, fabric scissors, and thimbles.

Paper Mache Birds                                                                  Ages 8 to 14

Using a one gallon milk jug, students will create exotic birds with paper mache and paint.  Along with the bird, campers will create a baby bird, eggs, and a picture of the bird’s habitat.

Kaleidoscopes & Kaleidoscope Designs                                 Ages 9 to 14

Using brightly colored magic markers, each student will create a radial kaleidoscope design containing a unique “hidden” message. Will your friends be able to find the hidden message? Probably not! Then we will build a real Kaleidoscope using recycled materials, mirror board, and beads.

That 70’s Class                                                             Ages 9 to 14

The 1970’s are cool again!  In this class, campers will learn two art forms making a comeback:  tie-dye and macramé.  Learn to tie-dye a shirt.  (Students will need to bring a white t-shirt for this class.)  Macramé is a system of knot tying rope to make designs and create objects like flowerpot holders and wall-hanging.  Join us in recreating the mood of the 70’s!

Advanced Digital Photography                                                Ages 9 to 14

This class will explore the world of photography and Photoshop in more detail!  Really challenge your creative side by learning advanced photography and Photoshop techniques while having a great time!  Campers must have already taken a photography class or be experienced with both photography and Photoshop.  Campers will need access to a digital camera and a flash drive (1 GB minimum).
